What are the main differences between Old Holland artists oil paints and Michael Harding's oil paints?
Technical thoughts would be very helpful, but subjective views welcome too.
Many thanks.
Both are premium quality paints.
Both have a very high pigment load.
MH is a long paint while OH is short.
This means Harding is more buttery in consistency while OH is notoriously stiff. Many people prefer one over the other however it is common for people to add a medium or some oil when using OH.
Recently, MH has made moves towards producing a paint that performs consistently across their color range. Some pigments behave differently than others. Some need to be ground coarser or finer in order to bring out the best in that pigment. Some pigments dry slower or faster than others. Certain colors are being adulterated slightly to average out these inconsistencies.
Old Holland is considered to be one of the top 5 brands available in oil paint. MH had also been included the top 5. Because of the recent changes some people are using less MH or have abandoned MH altogether. 98% of oil paint on the market is adulterated to some extent, MH is arguably one of the finest paints despite the adjustments.
I continue to purchase both.
The best Burnt Umber available is Old Holland. It is the least prone to cracking and "sinking in" a condition where the paint dries intermittently flat/matte and is therefore difficult to match in color upon returning to paint a following day. Retouch varnish helps when this arises. Some people avoid using mediums and varnishes during the painting process.
